The back pass in the goalkeeper: intention vs luck

As goalkeeping coaches, we are used to listen to phrases from friends, coaches or even professional colleagues such as: that was lucky! And we could argue the reasons of that supposed luck. The positioning and the placing are two key aspects for the proper interpretation of the goalkeeper that favours the success of the action.

That was a stroke of luck!

The ball hit him and not the other way around!

What luck!

These are expressions that football professionals are used to hear. Not only from the supporters, but from the footballers, coaches and goalkeepers themselves… even we said them sometime! And it’s ok, because we sometimes watch goalkeepers’ performances that seem incredible and we just say those phrases, without thinking.

But: do you think there is intention in some of them? A pattern of behaviour that makes the difference or helps the ball hit him/her?

We tracked our database and we want to show you some of those actions so, together we can think about them:

LET’S REFLECT…

SHALL WE SUM UP?

Football and specifically the goalkeeping position are not a world of basic concepts. No two situations are alike, so looking for an ultimate behavioural tactical pattern seems risky from our point of view.
