Warming and the importance of sensations

We analyze the warm-up of Courtois with Athletico Madrid in its last season with the mattress team. And we reflect on the importance of sensations. Specifically those that the handshake gives us.

Thibaut Nicolas Marc Courtois. A name as long as almost 199 centimeters in height. But this feature does nothing but strengthen one of its main values under the three suits: THE TEMPERANCE. A quiet and competitive personality in the eyes of those who do not have the pleasure of working with him on a day to day basis. But:

How does Courtois get into the game that way with only 24 years?

HEATING AS A PSYCHOLOGICAL TOOL

As practically all warm-up, Courtois begins with joint mobility and muscular activation. It is common to see how goalkeepers during that kind of tasks touch the grass to see if it is wet, look at the sky to see if there is sun, clouds, wind … And reflect on the weather conditions in which the match will be played . They look up at the stands to see how little by little they are filling up … Processes that insensibly make you “smell” a match and little by little get involved in the competition.

But today, we want to talk about the importance of handshaking inside any warming. And more if possible, in the match.

When we think of “handshake” we think of a merely technical action. But, we believe that it is not just any action. If we stop to think, the vast majority of our workouts when the goalkeeper first touches the ball, he does it by blocking. When it warms up in a match, too. And, this action, offers many sensations to the goalkeeper. Sensations that begin with trust. And they have the doorman for an internal dialogue.

That is why, from my goal, we believe that pre-match warming must be based mainly on sensations. And as goalkeeping coaches, we should listen to them not only in the goalkeeper’s mouth. But also, perceive those small messages that the goalkeeper with his performances and body language projects us. Do not be afraid to improvise even if you have a planned “type heating”. Since that day, maybe it should be the goalkeeper who can not guide as to:

  1. What tasks to do
  2. In which to influence more
  3. What number of repetitions can we do
  4. What intensity do we mark

As an example, the video shown above. Where goalkeeper and coach goalkeepers perform a warm-up practically out of goal. With hardly a knock on the door and where the blocking of hands takes absolute priority.
